I'm taking a cue from the NPR show "All Songs Considered" and at the suggestion of S&P, am posting a list of songs I think would be in my playlist for the subject of Breakups.
As always, feel free to add:
1. "Lesson Learned" - Ray LaMontagne
2. "Last Goodbye" - Jeff Buckley
3. "I'm Gonna Find Another You" - John Mayer
4. "Song For The Dumped" - Ben Folds Five
5. "Cry Me A River" - Harry Connick Jr. (The Justin Timberlake song w/ similar title is also substitutable)
6. "Sign On The Door" - Edwin McCain
7. "Parting Gift" - Fiona Apple
8. "Nothing But A Miracle" - Diane Birch
9. "The Reason Why" - Rachael Yamagata
10. "Interstate Love Song" - STP
Song of the Day: "All Is Full Of Love" - Bjork
...Just so everything doesn't seem too gloomy.

Interesting - I was thinking what I would put on the list - I think it can be divided into four loose categories
1. John Mayer esque songs (he is king of these forms of break up songs)- the I love you but I can't really and truly slag you directly in a song:
Heartbreak Warfare
Dreaming with a Broken Heart
Slow Dancing in a Burning Room etc
2. The "I Hate" You/Cheating Bastard category:
Kelly Clarkson - Low, Since You've Been Gone etc
Whitney Houston - It's Alright
Taylor Swift - White Horse
Miranda Lambert - Kerosene
Alanis Morrisette - You Oughta Know
3. I am SOO Much Better without You/Don't let the door hit you on the way out:
Whomever - I Will Survive
PCD - I Don't Need a Man
Kellie Pickler - Best Day of Your Life
Keith Urban
4. I want to eat EVERYTHING or NOTHING and cry in tub/shower until I hurt songs
Country in general works amazing for this:
Lady Antebellum: All We'd Ever Need, Things People Say
Chely Wright-Shut up and Drive
As we can see country and sugary pop a la Kelly is my go to when I am doing all the moaning and bemoaning Ms J can handle...
Meh it's life and yes some of us hold torches more visibly then others, others like me the classic Gemini of two minds goes through stages of hate and lost love - let's just say AB has found himself in the I would burn everything of yours if I could category... and I've done that before for an ex - burned his stuff.
You pretty much broke it down to a science. That's one hell of a selection.
Kelly C - she was the muse of our band way back when. Our lead guitarist had a huge crush on her. You got some good classics here too! Whitney and Gloria Gaynor (I will survive), completely wiffed on those.
The rest, I'm gonna have to look up in my spare time.
Thanks for sharing, kiddo. Hope you had a good day today.
As to breaking it down to a science, I'm a girl, the minute boys existed so do my awareness to the intricacies of the heartbreak song. As to the others I like them but I know that some might not
Everybody's got their own tastes. And I'm all for that. I learned the hard way a long time ago that swaying people to what I like is like pissing against the wind. It's never a good idea.
So if you like soft rock, then rock on! Softly! It's all good.
<3 Rachael Yamagata <3 <3
Fields - Parasite; I think you might like.
Hey, Jillian, thanks for the suggestion! I really dig the use of cello in this song. The lyrics too are perfect fodder for the subject! Love it! Thanks for the new band =)!
