Some people are just born romantics

Check this out.
I had a 64 year-old patient today who was going for penile implant surgery. Seriously. A few minutes before we headed to the OR, I asked him the question that every guy would have asked if they were in my place...

Why?

Why would you go through such a seemingly painful (and it sure looked painful, afterwards) procedure?

He looked at me straight in the eyes and answered with a faint smile:
I love my wife...and Valentine's Day is coming up.

I just had to smile after that one.

Ah, l'amour.

Song of the day: "My Funny Valentine" - Chet Baker

Interesting, I don't know how I feel about that, not that I get any say in it at all. A part of me wants to equate that to a husband expecting his wife to get nipped, tucked or "enhanced" and yet in many ways I know that is comparing two very different surgeries. It also somewhat stretched my brain that at that age such a procedure would be necessary - yes I am aware I am implying your sex drive disappears along with your eye sight as you get older. And I know it doesn't - that's a social misconception that we hold on to because I think in many ways it's hard enough to deal with our parents having sex, but our grandparents?

Prudish? I can handle that label. In the end I can't help but want to say, you know diamonds would have been an equally nice gift - then again they don't really get you the same result. Wonder if she's buying the flowers this year.

That's pretty funny! Maybe she is getting the flowers. When He answered me, I just got caught off guard. I wanted to laugh out loud, but for the sake of prudence, I had to hold it in. Not really sure if he was kidding or not with his answer, but I figured what he said might get a chuckle from whoever reads.
Diamonds might cost the same...not as painful, perhaps.
As for the appropriateness of the procedure...I suppose the man's a candidate. And maybe he's paying for it out of pocket. Perhaps this procedure might help his quality of life in some measure. Who knows.
